What is the Paleo diet?<br />
The background of the paleo diet is built around the premise that our genetics have not changed too much since the Palaeolithic era, otherwise known as the caveman era. Palaeolithic researchers have gone into proving that this phenomenon is true and that many of our modern food sources are the key problems in the development of diseases such as weight gain/obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and so forth.<br/><br />
You see methods of agriculture to grow things like grains and legumes en masse have only been around for about 10 000 years. So these scientists say that our bodies have not been able to adapt to the change. On the other hand, the caveman way of eating had sustained our human species for millions of years. Of course we couldn’t avoid death by sabre tooth tiger, but the existence of disease was rare.<br/><br />
There is still a lot more research to do but people are seeing incredible results from the paleo diet and lifestyle, with both easy weight loss and many increased health benefits.<br/><br />
It makes logical sense when you think about it. But although the whole caveman idea is the premise on which the paleo diet comes from, I personally like to think of it as a real food, clean food and a natural, healthy diet that excludes many of the foods of modern agriculture.<br/><br />

This week was a travel week so I did the best I could considering I also fell down on some gravel here in FL while on my business trip (I know, clutz lol) and hurt my left leg and knee.  I&#8217;ll survive and it&#8217;s been a real nice stay here but I&#8217;m ready to get home to my hubby and my own bed.  I don&#8217;t ever sleep very well without him so I&#8217;m exhausted.<br/><br />

Need to add the rest of my HBBC points when I get back.  Hoping to get in some workouts this week with family here but Kev and I will be back at our team workouts soon.  I look forward to that!  It&#8217;s been a while because he has had a bum shoulder.<br/><br />

The Paleo Diet<br />
If you haven’t heard of the paleo diet, you can read the What is the Paleo diet? post I wrote for Angie last week where I explain what the paleo diet is in more detail. But today I wanted to share what a typical day might look like on the paleo diet.<br/><br />
Why?<br/><br />
Because people who have never heard of the paleo diet always wonder exactly what you might eat when you can’t eat all those non paleo diet foods. So to make it easy I thought I’d just include some pictures of what a typical day of paleo meals might look like on my plate.<br/><br />
Breakfast- A bountiful serve of bacon, scrambled eggs and freshly cooked salsa<br/><br />
<br/><br />
Snack – Nuts, seeds and a few raisins<br/><br />
<br/><br />
Lunch – Spicy chicken served over a bed of lettuce and topped with avocado and a drizzle of olive oil<br/><br />
<br/><br />
Dinner – A delicious plate of spaghetti bolognaise – without the spaghetti because that’s not paleo friendly. Instead this bolognaise is served on a bed of tasty sautéed cabbage noodles.<br/><br />

And of course don’t forget to keep healthy snacks handy. This is essential to any weight loss success!<br/><br />
Snacks I keep handy at work. <br/><br />
Some tinned salmon and tuna, apples or fruit, and a bag of nuts.<br/><br />

As you can see from the above day of eating, the paleo diet and lifestyle is far from boring. Anyway I hope that gives you a good idea on what the paleo diet is all about.<br/><br />

Looking Back<br/><br />
We had a lot going on this past year and are ready to put it behind us.  Quite a few family members had major health issues so 2011 wasn&#8217;t the best year for us and was pretty challenging.<br/><br />
My father in law had a major stroke and many didn&#8217;t believe he was going to make it OR even ever go home if he did but he fought hard and was able to go home this past week.<br/><br />
My stepdaughter and her hubby announced they were due with their 1st baby in January 2012.  So we have been preparing to spend some good quality time with them in Oklahoma.<br/><br />
This past year we also completed our home gym, a dream we had for a very long time.  We spent the summer building a shed so we could move everything from the garage into it.<br/><br />
We then set out to remodel our home gym garage space.  It turned out exceptionally well considering all the time and hard work and we are so happy with that.  YES, I still need to get more pictures and a video together to share with you.  I haven&#8217;t forgotten!<br/><br />
Looking Forward<br/><br />
I have high hopes for 2012!  There are so many things I would like to accomplish this year.<br/><br />
I gained back a lot of the weight I previously lost and need to get back into consistent healthy habits.  I do have some specific healthy living goals for 2012 listed below in no particular order.<br/><br />
1)  Keep a food journal<br/><br />
When I first started my healthy living journey over 5 years ago, I kept a very specific food journal and was successful with losing weight.  I should have never stopped that and I want to get back to it.<br/><br />
My goal for the food journal right now is to just jot down what I eat throughout the day.  If I find that I&#8217;m still struggling with losing weight, I&#8217;ll have to get back to adding more specifics like how much I eat, the calories, etc.  This might take me on the hunt for an iPhone food journal app. But I like to keep things simple plus I&#8217;m really not THAT techy.<br/><br />
On the topic of food, I personally don&#8217;t like to follow any one diet plan BUT I do want to learn more about low carb eating options, Paleo for weight loss and even the vegan lifestyle.  I&#8217;ll just combine them all to find a healthier way to eat for ME.<br/><br />
2)  Train for December Reggae Marathon 10k run/walk<br/><br />
Kev and I have been talking about returning to Jamaica next December to participate in the Reggae Marathon again. This time, instead of doing the half marathon, I&#8217;ll train to do the 10k (run/walk).<br/><br />
3)  Fitness every day<br/><br />
I want to be more active!  I love to exercise but lately I have been slacking big time and just finding excuse after excuse to not do it some days.  I want to make it a point to do something active every day even if it&#8217;s not a full fledged workout.  Whether it&#8217;s Wii Fit, a walk in the park or a quick 100 crunches on the ball, my mantra will be fitness every day.<br/><br />
4)  Cook<br/><br />
Kevin is the one who does all the cooking around here OR we eat meals out.  Starting in February, I would like to cook at least 2 meals a week. To do that I must learn how to cook ha ha.  I&#8217;ll be on the search for easy vegetarian recipes!<br/><br />
5)  Weight Training/Abs program 3x a week<br/><br />
My mom and dad were VERY generous and bought us an adjustable weight set for Christmas.  This has been on our home gym wish list for quite some time so now I have no excuse.  Looking forward to this.<br/><br />
6)  Lose 85 lbs<br/><br />
Enough said!<br/><br />
So now that I have looked back over last year and set goals for the new year, I&#8217;m ready to rock 2012.<br/><br />

Sugar Detox Plan for Weight Loss<br />
My friend Jedha is back with a great guest post on starting a sugar detox plan.  This is definitely something I need to do this year. I must cut down on sugar!<br/><br />
Try A Sugar Detox To Amp Up Your Weight Loss Results<br/><br />
Did you know that there are many hidden sugars in many commonly consumed foods? And it’s these sugars that may be directly impacting your weight management?<br/><br />
You see when we eat excess sugar it basically gets converted into fat in the body if it is unused. And because we don’t really need any excess sugar in our diet, this happens very easily.<br/><br />
So if you have been struggling to lose weight or if you want to simply amp up your results, then try a sugar detox plan for 21 days and just see how fast the results will come.<br/><br />
Here’s what you have to do.<br/><br />
1. Cut out all refined sugar<br/><br />
This is the most obvious form of sugar. The white or brown sugar that you may add to your coffee or breakfast cereal is a big no, no during your sugar detox.<br/><br />
2. Cut out all processed foods<br/><br />
Many processed foods contain sugar or sugar derivatives like high fructose corn syrup and so forth. These sugars cause massive weight gain and even in the smallest amounts can prevent you from shifting those excess pounds.<br/><br />
Yes, that means you have to stop eating fast food, most take out, commercially bought cereals, crackers, cookies, cakes, commercially bought sauces and condiments.  Have you ever stopped to read the food labels of the stuff you buy?<br/><br />
It contains many hidden ingredients that your body simply does not need. And these are often the ingredients that hold you back.<br/><br />
3. Cut out or largely reduce eating grains<br/><br />
Grains are heavy carbohydrates and although some of them such as brown rice, or whole grains may appear healthy, they can be a real problem for someone trying to regain control of blood sugar and get some excess weight off the body.<br/><br />
You see the carbohydrates from grains act exactly like sugar once they are digested and hit your blood stream. And inevitably the excess sugar gets converted to fat.<br/><br />
If you find it hard to cut out all grains during your sugar detox, then stick to small portions of whole grains as a starting point.<br/><br />
4. Minimize your fruit intake<br/><br />
If you can cut out fruit all together during your sugar detox, then do it. But if not limit your fruit to one piece a day and choose from low GI fruits like berries, melons or an apple.<br/><br />
Trust me, if you’re stuck on a weight loss plateau and you are still eating sugar or sugar filled foods, stop and you will get better results.<br/><br />
If you want to kick off a new weight loss plan and get good initial results that will spur you on to keep going, try a sugar detox. If you simply want to get more out of what you are doing now, try a sugar detox and just see what happens. It’s only 21 days so you’ve got nothing but success to experience by giving it a go!<br/><br />
